""Running a fine stream of liquids over the forehead (the 'third eye')""
Shiro Dhara is a form of Sukhachikitsa (restorative therapy) that involves gentle pouring of liquids (oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water) over the forehead (the 'third eye').
Even though Shiro Dhara is commonly used for relaxation, it is very effectively used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, graying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, migraine, ménière's disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis. It is also used non-medicinally at spas due to its relaxing properties.
- Those who have pain and stress, particularly in the face, head, neck and shoulders.
- Those who have psoriasis, sleep disorders or mental agitation.
It is immediately followed by a head wash with Amla (Indian Gooseberry) water and a medicated warm water bath.
In Ayurveda, the mind and the body are influencing each other. So there can be no physical health without mental health and vice versa. Shiro Dhara is one part or feature of the ancient Hindu holistic medical practice of Ayurveda. “Shiro Dhara” is a Sanskrit word combining two words; “Shiro” meaning “head”, and “Dhara” meaning “flow”. Shiro Dhara treatments feature the steady streaming of warm, fragrant oil onto the “third eye” on your forehead.
Shiro Dhara is a very relaxing treatment that leaves you feeling both calm and clear headed. It aims to stimulate the flow of energy around your body. It is used to treat a range of skin conditions, along with eye problems, stress, insomnia, memory loss, and graying hair. A wide range of liquids can be used, depending on the body type of the patient; oils are common, but milk, buttermilk, and herbal deccotion water can be used as well. Frequently, the liquid will be infused with herbs which are tailored to the client.
Stimulation to the “third eye” area affects deep centers in the brain that release brain chemicals, one of which is serotonin, a chemical that gives us the feeling of pleasure and relaxation. It also frees the subtle energies of channels situated along the spine that help to calm and clear the mind.
