“Pancha” means five. Panchakarma represents five cleansing methods .The following treatments are the five detoxifying methods:
Nasyam: (Nasal therapy)Applying herbal juice or medicated oil or herbal powder into nostrils.
Vamana: (Vomiting therapy)Therapeutic vomiting by oral intake of medical preparation. This treatment is done for the aggravated kapha dosha and thus dislodges the toxins mainly from the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. This therapy is also done for preventive & curative purposes.
Virechanam: (Purgation)By oral intake of medicinal preparation which cleanses the gastrointestinal tract, liver and gall bladder from toxins. It also removes toxins from the blood and thus purifies the blood. Virechanam is mainly indicated to regulate pitta and thus corrects the digestion and metabolism.
Vasthi: Colon purification with herbal oils or mixture of decoction,oil and other materials according to the condition. It is recommended as purification therapy for Vath.So it cures nervous disorders , arthritic problems and endocrine problems.
Rakthamoksha: Bloodletting process; effective in some skin diseases and rheumatic complaints.
The duration of this purification treatment will be decided by the doctor according to body condition and body constitution. It may vary from 45 days to 90 days. It can be decided according to your days available but minimum 45 days are required .
Panchakarma is the preliminary therapy for the rejuvenation therapy such as Rasayana therapy and Vajeekarana therapy.
