Varkala, the lively small town, is accessible by bus train or plane. The nearby airport Trivandrum is a mere 45 minutes away. The beach area itself is located four kilometres from the city and has all necessary facilities to offer.
Varkala Beach is divided into three areas: the recently developed South Cliff, where The Oceano is located, the Beach Road area and the lively North Cliff with its plenty of restaurants and shops.
On the cliff the sunset is truly what the name promises – the perfect moment when the red sun dips into the ocean. And certainly the long sandy beach is an other reason to come and enjoy lovely Varkala.
Especially we like to mention the natural springs that run out of the cliff walls on several spots. Your sweetwater shower right on the beach.
Within the Varkala Beach area everything is within walking distance.
What else has Varkala to offer? Find for example the calm temple complex at the end of Beach Road – which comes to blasting life in the festival season. Or visit the Sivagiri Ashram situated on the top of the Sivagiri hill, the pilgrimage centre of the great social reformer of Kerala.
The State of Kerala is known as India’s “God’s own country”. Nature created this foremost beauty, from the mountain ranges to the famous backwaters, with their natural lakes and canals, over the white sandy beaches of the pristine Arabian Sea. The climate brings out lush vegetation of powerful green tea plantations, rice paddies and fertile soils for the agricultural growth of an abundance of fruit, vegetables, herbs, and spices. All that as well as the protected sanctuaries for wildlife spotting and most certainly, the ease of a relaxed holiday makes Kerala the place to be.
One of the most precious spots that you will find in “God’s own country”, is laid back Varkala. The unspoiled cliff area has much to offer for those who search for tranquillity from the bustle of the city. Here you find the peace to look after your body and mind with Ayurvedic treatments, yoga classes, or just a lazy day at the beach – combined with the influence of Indian culture and food. Make your holiday a real treat. Come and experience it for yourself.
Best time to travel
Varkala is worth to be visited all year long. The Oceano Beach Retreat as well as our sister hotel Eden Garden are open all year to offer you treatments and pleasure. For a beach vacation the month from November until March are the best time for a stay. And for a serious Ayurvedic treatment, the Ayurvedic specialists recommend the monsoon season from June to September, while body and mind are more receptive for treatments.
